A good place to start is your wardrobe and in fact the most sustainable garment is the one hanging in your wardrobe.
The big picture issue: Australia is considered a high producer of waste; we are suffocating in waste and the problem is textile waste has been identified as huge here is Australia. We are the second-largest consumers of new textiles and we throw out over $500 Million worth of fashion and textiles each year.
The timing is right for slow rather than fast fashion. Slow fashion is about circulating good quality clothes and increasing their life rather than disposing of them.
Fast fashion on the other hand has a short life due to several factors like poor design and quality. Items fall apart after a few wears and are often usually disposed of rather than repaired or circulated.
We can individually decide to consciously create a new criterion for shopping (either online or instore) that match our principles to buy quality and reduce textile landfill.
We can create a new set of criteria to ensure we purchase something that truly aligns with sustainable values.
Our shared values for sustainable solutions:
Buy less but ensure it is better quality and keep it longer.
We all need to wear clothes in our daily lives so the impact of dressing is enormous, we donโt need to be dedicated activists, just dedicated clothes wearers who choose to value clothes and choose to prolong the use of their clothes rather than discarding them.
Can you imagine If 100% of the population were conscious consumers?
